Winter storm blasting Calgary and area

RCMP in Okotoks, High River and Nanton, are not recommending travel on Highway 2 and secondary highways, and Strathmore RCMP are saying the same with the TransCanada Highway east of Calgary.
Implications from the storm began early Sunday, while snow was just drifting in, with power outages in Ogden and Lynwood Ridge and a pole fire in the city’s southeast.
Enmax spokesperson Doris Kaufman-Woodcock tells 660News they’ve been able to restore those outages, but they anticipate more through-out the day and have called in extra crews as a result.
Kelly Dyer with the Calgary Roads Department says her crews are working hard on clearing roads and they had crews ready to go early, as the forecast gave a fair amount of warning that the storm was coming.
She says they are working a priority system where the highest volume roads will be cleared first followed by secondary streets.
660 Meteorologist David Spence says the storm will be centred over Nebraska by Sunday evening.
He says the Calgary Airport had recorded 12 cm of snow by mid-afternoon, and another 2-4 cm could fall by Monday morning meaning the morning commute may still be a bit on the messy side.
Calgary police are tweeting closures due to crashes and downed power lines, and report there were 155 collisions during the day Sunday, 14 of which resulted in injuries.
Calgary Transit has warned passengers that due to the heavy snow and poor road conditions, all routes and buses are experiencing significant delays.
At Calgary International Airport, over 50 flights were cancelled to and from YYC Sunday, so it’s best to check ahead if you’re flying or picking up someone at the airport.
