Calgary Firefighters honoured with medals

Monday was a special day for Calgary Firefighters.
Seventy-six were honoured by the Provincial Fire Commissioner with exemplary service medals, which is handed out to both full time and volunteer members for outstanding fire service.
Lieutenant Grant Rinas tells 660News 20 years of service is the minimum requirement to earn the medal.
“It’s exemplary service in the community. You have to be nominated by your peers and approved by your Fire Chief before you can be given the award by the federal government,” says Rinas.
Rinas adds the award is special.
“It’s nice to be honoured by first of all your Fire Chief and by the Federal Government for the service to your community. There’s a lot of missed birthdays, missed holidays, and a lot of nights that people get to stay safe in bed while those of us that are working don’t. So, it’s nice to be honoured for that,” says Rinas.
