Guards could have done more to stop jail beating

A new report says guards could have prevented the brutal beating of a Russian inmate at the Calgary Remand Centre.

An internal investigation has found officers put Denis Telyakov in a cell with two of his attackers even though there were empty cells elsewhere in the prison.

The 25-year-old suffered long term brain injuries from the beating in August of 2012.

The Calgary Herald reports Telyakov is back in Russia now, but his family is still considering a civil suit against authorities in Calgary.

Two officers involved in the incident were fired by the Alberta Justice and Solicitor General.
