Flood taking toll on business community in High River

Businesses in High River say they’re struggling to re-open after the flood.

The president of the town’s Chamber of Commerce says the small business community is in danger of collapsing unless the province injects much-needed cash into the local economy.

But Yousra Jomha tells The Calgary Herald she’s hesitant about using the province’s new flood recovery loan program because there’s no income coming in to pay back the cash.

Meanwhile, federal officials say Alberta didn’t receive mitigation funds from Ottawa following the 2005 flood in High River, because it wasn’t made a priority.

Alberta politicians argue they repeatedly tried to access funds, but it was near impossible.
