Funnel clouds spotted in Calgary

A tornado watch is over for Calgary as well as Okotoks, High River, Claresholm, Brooks, Strathmore and Vulcan.
Environment Canada has said conditions were favourable for the development of funnel clouds or weak tornadoes Friday night.
We had a number of reports of a funnel cloud visible over the area; Colin gave us a call from just south of Calgary.
“It was a long thin funnel cloud, it was a few miles south of Red Deer Lake, probably somewhere north of Okotoks. It formed a long “S” came fairly close to the ground, I don’t know if it actually touched the ground, but it was a weak funnel cloud,” says Colin.
Jordan Edwards snapped a picture of the funnel and you can see it on our website or our twitter feed. he was on his way home in Bridlewood after picking up his daughter from daycare when he spotted it.
“Looking towards the south and kinda pulled over and took a quick picture. Within 2 minutes it was gone, like it was there and then it disappeared.”
These types of funnel clouds form out of large cumulus clouds or very weak thunderstorms and normally do not have the energy to reach the ground.
