Landfill fire reignites in SE Calgary

A landfill fire in southeast Calgary has flared up again, forcing firefighters to return to the site for a third straight day.
The fire first broke out Sunday evening at the ECCO Recycling facility in the Shepard Industrial area of southeast Calgary.
The Calgary Fire Department (CFD) responded around 6 p.m., with crews bringing the fire under control by Monday night, handing responsibility back to the business.
By early Tuesday morning, however, new reports of smoke and fire prompted crews to return throughout the day and overnight. HazMat teams and Alberta Environment set up air‑monitoring equipment and contingency plans in case conditions worsened.
On Wednesday around 6 a.m., multiple hot spots reignited, spreading through debris piles and producing heavy smoke across parts of southeast Calgary. The city says specialized teams and contractors with heavy machinery have since been brought in to break apart debris and reach deep‑seated fire pockets.
CFD says the fire remains contained to the landfill, but crews will stay on site until the fire is fully extinguished. Residents in nearby neighbourhoods may continue to notice smoke, which the fire department warned Monday could cause irritation.
Calgarians are asked not to call 911 unless flames spread beyond the landfill.
There is still no word on what caused the fire.
