Alberta wages expected to increase in 2014: survey

2014 looks like it could be a good year for people working in our city.

The Hay Group has released its annual salary projections and according to the numbers, Calgary employees will see about a 3.5 per cent increase in pay.

Overall, Canadians can expect an average salary increase of 2.6 per cent.

That’s well below projected increases of 3.7 per cent before the 2008-09 economic downturn.

The projected increase is based on input from more than 500 Canadian organizations in June and July.

Hay Group says this year, the highest increases are in the oil and gas sector at four per cent followed by services at 3.3 per cent and credit unions at 3.2 per cent.

These high forecasts are a continued reflection of the demand for key skills and experience.

Alberta is among the highest, ranked third behind Newfoundland and Labrador and Saskatchewan.

Canadian projections rank about average against some industrialized nations, above France, Italy and Japan but behind others such as the U.S., U.K., India, China and Russia.
