Thousands expected for Calgary’s annual Pride Parade

It started in the 1990’s as a parade of around 50, with people wearing bags over their heads to hide their identity, but now, a crowd of up to 40-thousand people is expected in the downtown core for Calgary’s annual Pride Parade and street festival.
Pride Calgary President Stephen Wright tells 660News Alison Redford will make history becoming the first Alberta premier to march in one of the provinces pride parades.
Redford tweeted recently that she is “pleased” to be attending the parade.
She was also the first Alberta premier to participate in Edmonton’s gay pride festival when she spoke after the parade in June 2012.
Kathleen Wynne, Canada’s first openly gay provincial leader, made history earlier this year when she became the first Ontario premier to march in the Toronto pride parade.
The parade begins at 12pm Sunday, leaving from Center Street and Stephen Avenue proceeding west towards Shaw Millennium Park, home of the festival which continues until 6pm.
