Alberta class sizes continue to multiply

Alberta students may be competing for their teacher’s attention this year.
With thirty or forty students to a classroom, the Alberta Teachers’ Association wants funding re-located to tackle the problem.
There are 11,000 more students heading to school this year in the province, and with funding being slashed to school boards, there’s a shortage of teachers to handle the increase.
While Kindergarten to Grade Three class sizes are on the radar, high schools are also dealing with bigger numbers.
ATA President Mark Ramsankar tells 660News, this has been an issue for far too long.
“I’m surprised we’re starting (the 2013 school year), and class sizes and the structures and the complexity within the classroom are still a going concern,” he says.
Ramsankar says Alberta needs to re-evaluate their classroom size initiative to help teachers do their jobs.
