Photo identification isn’t mandatory to vote for this upcoming civic election.
So what’s needed in order to vote on October 21st?
I.D. showing your name and current address will enable you to vote, which includes a driver’s license or an Alberta Identification Card but also utility bills or housing documents.
Returning Officer Barb Clifford says the mail-in voting option has also improved as a result of what happened in 2010 when people couldn’t get their ballots back in sufficient time.
“We put in an early mailing option on the mail-In ballots so that if people wish them sent before nomination day, we would send it out, as long as they confirm they have access to the Internet to be able to get the names of the candidates on September 24th. So, that was done and we had close to 1,000 people take advantage of that option,” says Clifford.
Also among the changes for this election is that the title of Alderman will change to Councillor but only the title will change; the position duties and expectations of the role are not changing.
As well, the term of office for elected officials will change from three to four years. Previously, a General Election was held every three years. With the term of office change, a General Election will now happen every four years.
There’s also a Smartphone app, ‘YYC Votes’, with everything you need to know.
