Airport cab drivers were refusing to pick up passengers in Calgary on Monday, as an ongoing dispute between Associated Cabs and its drivers appears to have come to a head, with both sides digging in their heals.
About 100 taxi drivers are parked at the airport bull pin to protest last week’s firing of Rupinder Gill. GIll is the head of the Calgary Cab Drivers Association, who has been critical of how the company is handling its contract with the airport.
Meanwhile, passengers were forced to wait in line for Sedan service.
“Even though it was only a 45 minute flight, we still don’t want to be waiting around. You just expect there to be cabs here (at the airport),” said one traveler from Edmonton.
The drivers say they are ready to wait as long as it takes for Gill to be re-hired by Associated, whose president says that will never happen.
This is the third such walkout by Associated Cab drivers since late August.
Meantime, the Calgary Airport Authority isn’t getting involved in the dispute.
It says the matter is between Associated Cabs and some of its contract workers.
Airport spokeswoman Jody Moseley tells 660News, the walkout has not adversely affected operations for travellers. Many customers are using other ‘on curb’ taxi companies or sedan services or you can book a different cab company to pick you up.
