Historic ring road agreement between Tsuu T’ina Nation and province signed

After years of back and forth between Calgary, Alberta and the Tsuu T’ina Nation, an historic agreement has been signed for the future southwest leg of the ring road.

The agreement that saw a favorable vote from Tsuu T’ina in October, essentially sells 1,000 acres of land to the province in exchange for 5,000 acres and more than $330 million.

The final ring road will cost the province billions of dollars by completion.

That completion date has not yet been announced.

During the signing ceremony on Wednesday, Chief Roy Whitney noted the many “no” votes over the years that lead to this final agreement.

“In a record turnout, unparalleled in modern history, in Tsuu T’ina history, a clear majority of Tsuu T’ina people voted for a better future for our children, our grandchildren and our great grandchildren and for those we have not had the opportunity to meet yet,” said Whitney.

About 300 community members attended the signing ceremony at the Sarcee Seven Chiefs Sportsplex.

Recognizing the ground work of past leaders, Premier Alison Redford voiced her intent to continue building a close relationship with the Tsuu T’ina Nation.

“I think that this is truly an agreement that signals a relationship of respect and trust, trust which always must be earned,” said Redford.

The Tsuu T’ina Nation will name the new section of road, overpasses will be adorned with decorations which honour the nation, and significant signage will be installed to show the partnership between the nation and the province.
