Cold weather causing pipe problems across the city

It’s a common problem in weather conditions like this, but it’s a pain none-the-less.

Water pipes are bursting all over the city as the temperature starts to warm up a little from the cold snap.

That has kept fire crews hopping according to Battalion Chief Ernie Molineaux.

“We’ve been to at least a dozen, three hotels, a couple of condominiums, a couple of buildings downtown, so it’s throughout the city. So far no major problems other than the water damage and a major inconvenience to a lot of people,” Molineaux said.

One of the burst pipes spilled out on to Macleod Trail near 46th Avenue leading to road crews needing to clean up the mess in the southbound lanes.

He says there’s not much you can do to prevent the issue, though keeping windows and parking garage doors closed will help.

Saturday, a broken pipe at the Sunridge Spectrum led to the cancellation of afternoon and evening screenings, and Landmark Cinemas in the northwest also dealt with flooding as well.
