Train derailment in Burnaby

BURNABY (NEWS1130) – Mounties in Burnaby are dealing with a train derailment.

Some coal has spilled into a ditch and Hamer says crews from C-N and C-P are on sight to assess any environmental impact, while motorists deal with traffic issues.

Around three rail cars are flipped over, spilling coal.

There are no reports of injuries or property damage.

Neighbours and environmentalists are concerned about more derailments like this one in the future.

Kevin Washbrook with Voters Taking Action on Climate Change said the incident is a wake-up call to limit rail expansion at Port Metro Vancouver.

“The Port Authority has absolute power to approve these expansions on port land, but it doens’t acknowledge that these expansions come with a cost for the surrounding communities, cost like train derailments,” he said.

Investigators say it’s still too early to speculate on what caused the derailment.
