Calgary Fire Department warns about unsafe ice

Residents may be happy about the warm temperatures headed our way, but it also brings a warning from the Calgary Fire Department.
The department’s Carol Henke says people have been venturing onto some unsafe ice surfaces.
“We have had several calls and now with the nice weather we understand that people want to get outside and enjoy the outdoors…however, for the public’s safety it is best that they stay off ponds, lakes, rivers.”
With the temperature rising over the next few days, ice surfaces can become very deceiving and dangerous.
The Fire Department advises you keep a safe distance and stay off of river banks and lake shores, and keep your children and pets from walking on ice-covered lakes, ponds and other waterways.
If you do happen to fall through the ice, try to remain calm, pull yourself as far onto the ice shelf as possible and call out for help.
