Fire at a SW carpet store

If it wasn’t for quick action by the Calgary Fire Department a blaze at carpet store may have been much worse.

It happened at Contempa Carpet in the 1300 block of 11th Avenue S.W. at about 3:00a.m. Thursday.

It’ll be limited hours for the local store but it was contained to the rear of the store.

Batallion Chief John Cherweniuk said it was the alarm company that tipped crews off to the blaze.

“Crews arrived and didn’t see anything from the front, and then drove around the back of the structure and saw a significant amount of smoke from an overhead door at the rear of the structure” Cherweniuk said.

The fire was coming from a dumpster inside. They doused it with water and pulled two of them into the alleyway.

It could have been worse given the flooring material and the storage area right ove rtop.

One of the owners Grant, was thankful the damage was minimal.

“Some very light smoke damage inside and mostly our garbage room outback. We’ll be open part time” he said.

They are still talking with their insurance company and hope to be back to business as usual for Friday.
