Driver pulled over on Highway 63 with anti-theft device still on wheel

There’s plenty of stories of people doing bizarre and dangerous things while driving, but this may be a new one.
RCMP responded to a unique call on Highway 63 Wednesday evening, near the village of Boyle.
They received calls about an erratic driver who was reportedly swerving and driving at a high rate of speed.
Police then found the anti-theft device, known as the “Club” was still attached to the wheel.
Typically, clubs are used for parked cars and allow very minimal movement of the steering wheel.
Cpl. John Spaans said what makes it more unusual is the driver was not inebriated and the car wasn’t stolen.
“Obviously if we pull over a vehicle with the Club on the steering wheel, we are going think right away that this is a stolen vehicle or something like that,” he said. “This was his vehicle and he took the club off without a problem after the traffic stop.”
Spaans said he’s only ever heard of a case like this once, where it was a stolen vehicle, and the driver was only able to drive a couple blocks.
“There is no explanation that I can see as to why he was driving with this, the only thing that we think of is just a matter of convenience,” Spaans said. “I don’t know if it was more convenient to drive with it on or if he was in a rush, but there is no reasonable explanation.”
A 27-year-old Fort McMurray man has been charged with careless driving and allowing an object to impede the safe operation of a vehicle.
