A mixed martial arts fighter is way more likely to suffer a traumatic brain injury than any other sport.
A new study out of the University of Toronto says the average MMA fighter experiences serious head trauma in almost a third of professional bouts.
The National Post reports, researchers looked at seven years of UFC scorecards, which noted when a fight ended with a knockout, as well as hours of video.
The study recommends banning the sport among younger people, and putting in new rules that would protect a fighter once he’s down, like in boxing.
The UFC is currently reviewing the research and hasn’t yet commented on it.
