Mass shooting at Fort Hood

There has been a mass shooting at the U-S military base at Fort Hood, Texas.

The assailant is dead from what appears to be a self-inflicted wound.

A Fort Hood official says the shooter in the attack at the Army base was being assessed for whether he had PTSD.

Lt. Gen. Mark A. Milley said Wednesday that four people were killed including the shooter and 16 others were wounded in the attack. He says the wounded were all military members.

Milley says there is no indication the shooting was related to terrorism.

He says the shooter is married and served in Iraq 2011.

Barack Obama says the American government will get to the bottom of what happened in a shooting incident at the Army’s Fort Hood base. Obama says he’s following the situation closely but that the situation is fluid. He says officials are doing everything they can to make sure everyone is secure.

The president says the incident brings back painful memories of the 2009 mass shooting at Fort Hood. He says, quote, “We’re heartbroken that something like this might’ve happened again.”

Obama says people at Fort Hood have sacrificed so much for freedom and their sense of safety has been broken once again.

Obama’s comments come as U.S. officials say one person is dead and 14 wounded at the base.

Obama spoke in Chicago where he held a fundraiser.

In 2009, Fort Hood was the scene of another mass shooting that left 13 people dead and more than 30 wounded.

Major Nidal Hasan, a U-S military psychiatrist, was sentenced to death after he was convicted of that shooting.
