Lawrence Hong Express to honour Brentwood stabbing victim

Workers at Calgary Transit organized special charter buses Wednesday to take students to the fifth and final funeral for victims of deadly stabbings in Brentwood last week.

Jonathan Lea, a senior transit planner, said Lawrence Hong, who was close to graduating from the University of Calgary, was interested in a job in Calgary Transit’s Planning Department.

“Quite a few of us here know Lawrence here from working with him, from volunteering with him, some of our staff here teach a course at the University of Calgary, so quite a few of us have got to know him. He is a wonderful guy who’s really interested in public transport and just building a better city,” said Lea.

The 430 Lawrence Hong Express will run from the university to the Centre Street Church, where Hong’s funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Lea said they plan to run three buses at once and he expects they will all be full.

All fares paid by riders will be donated to the Calgary Fairy Tales Film Festival in Hong’s name.

Hong was just shy of his 28th birthday when he was killed at an end of school get-together early last Tuesday morning

Four others stabbed to death in the Brentwood tragedy were laid to rest Monday and Tuesday.
