Cycle track rolls ahead

‘We have a bike network.’
Mayor Naheed Nenshi uttering those words after Calgary City Council approved the controversial downtown cycle track pilot project by the slimmest of margins Monday.
However, there was one concession. 1st Street southeast will be left out of the route.
Kimberly Nelson with Bike Calgary tells 660News, she can live with that. “I’m still a little in shock,” she said. “It’s absolutely amazing that it went through with just the one ammendment. We’re really sad to lose 1st Street, but we’ll take it.”
The year long test of the downtown cycle track will begin next summer, with a report going to council in the fall of 2016.
Despite objections from some businesses, it will run along Stephen Avenue. The track has been a hot topic of debate for weeks in Calgary, with at times heated exchanges at public meetings and over Twitter. During Moday’s debate a handful of people had to be kicked out of council chambers when they heckled Councillor Druh Farrell.
