Gaping hole left after more bricks fall from crumbling building downtown

More bricks have dropped from the crumbling facade of a building downtown on 7th Street and 6th Avenue Southwest.

Some of the bricks have crushed a vehicle, and damaged others that were cordoned off due to safety concerns last Tuesday.

A meeting will take place Monday with the building owner, the fire department, city officials and more to come up with a plan to fix the problem.

The sidewalk and bike lane around 7th street between 6th and 7th avenues are closed off, even though the problem is on the other side of the structure.

A giant hole on the east side of the building appears to be growing.

Batalion Chief Ernie Molineaux says it started crumbling again around 7p.m. Sunday.

“You can actually see right inside the interior of the building — right through it. At approximately 1- 2a.m., some more came down. This is going to continue to happen basically, until the engineers and the contractors and everybody get together with their plan, and decide how they’re going to remediate the situation,” he said.

No one has been injured by the falling bricks.
