Environmental charges have now been laid against Plains Midstream Canada, two years after oil leaked from a pipeline into the Red Deer River.
The company has been charged with a federal offence under the Fisheries Act and a provincial charge for failing to report a release of crude oil as required under Alberta law.
In June 2012, 2,900 barrels of sour crud leaked from the company’s Rangeland pipeline near Sundre.
On March 29, 2014, the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) assumed jurisdiction for the matter under the Responsible Energy Development Act and the investigation was turned over to Alberta’s new single regulator of energy development in Alberta.
The AER ensures the safe, efficient, orderly, and environmentally responsible development of hydrocarbon resources over their entire life cycle. This includes allocating and conserving water resources, managing public lands, and protecting the environment while providing economic benefits for all Albertans.
