Thousands take in Canada Day celebrations in Calgary

Calgarians celebrated Canada’s 147th birthday throughout the city on Canada Day.
Events included a First Nations powwow at Prince’s Island Park, showcasing aboriginal culture and dress through storytelling, music and dance.
The first big pancake breakfast of the season was held at Fort Calgary with jump houses, pony rides and a petting zoo, with admission half-price.
The gates opened at Heritage Park for its 50th birthday on Canada Day. It kicked off with a pancake breakfast and continued with an official citizenship ceremony, games, crafts, mini-chuckwagon races, music and entertainment.
The Stephen Avenue Walk Canada Day Street Party was held with plenty of artisans, vendors, buskers and patios and topped off with the Summer Stage Music Series.
Families also celebrated at Olympic Plaza with games, kid’s music, special activities and Calgary’s ‘Biggest Birthday Party Ever” for anyone born on July 1st.
At various locations in the East Village, many checked out that community’s street fair and show & shine, plus music and food vendors.
Riverfront Avenue saw thousands of Calgarians form a massive Canadian flag, with the first 3,000 receiving a free red or white t-shirt.
There was also the Chinatown Night Market, the Food Truck Roundup & BassBus at Festival Market at Eau Claire Market, where the city’s most popular street vendors served Japanese, Greek, Italian and more.
At the Harry Hays Building on the north lawn facing the Bow River, some great musical performances were featured from Mother Mother, Michael Bernard Fitzgerald, Ridley Bent and Scarlett Jane.
Then of course, it wouldn’t be Canada Day without fireworks, which were launched from the Centre Street Bridge just after 10:45 pm, synchronized to music.
