A deadly crash shut down Memorial Drive for more than five hours after an SUV hit a tree on the front lawn of a townhouse complex at 44th Street S.E.
Emergency crews were called to Memorial Drive and 44th Street around 9:20 p.m. Friday.
One person was found dead in the vehicle while two other victims were discovered lying on the ground nearby.
“When we arrived they were actually outside the vehicle but at this time we’re unsure as to how they got outside the SUV. They may have been thrown from their seats due to the force of the collision or they may have been moved by bystanders prior to us arriving,” says Calgary Fire Department Battalion Chief John Cherweniuk.
A man and a woman, both in their late teens or early twenties, were rushed to hospital in critical, life-threatening condition.
The SUV was badly mangled, virtually wrapped around the tree.
Speed is being investigated as a factor in the crash.
Police are also looking into whether alcohol or road conditions were involved.
