Guilty plea in gruesome animal cruelty case

The man charged in an animal cruelty case that sickened Calgarians in January has pleaded guilty in court.
Nicolino Camardi was arrested in May after the bodies of a dog and cat were found in a southwest Calgary alleyway with their mouths taped shut.
Friday, court heard Camardi was high on crack cocaine when investigators say he tortured and killed the 9 month old kitten and 2 year old Husky, and left them in that alley last January.
Heather Anderson with the Daisy Foundation says she doesn’t think the fact that he was on drugs should matter.
“I don’t buy that, I don’t care. There’s no drug in the world that would make you do those kind of things there’s nothing unless you are evil. There’s no drug that would make a person do that unless your evil.”
The crown wants a pre-sentence and psychiatric report before sentencing and says it will be seeking far more than the seven months he’s already served awaiting trial.
While the Daisy Foundation is relieved that Camardi has pleaded guilty, Anderson is worried it will mean a lesser sentence.
“He knows that by pleading guilty, unfortunately, it will give him a better look to the judge.”
Ultimately, Anderson says she would like to see Camardi put away for a long time and deemed a high risk offender.
He’ll be back in front of a judge again next Thursday.
