Several Calgary Board of Education high schools were evacuated Friday morning after receiving threatening emails.
Sgt. Joe Hebert with the Calgary Police Service said the messages demanded bitcoins and if those weren’t met, explosive devices would be placed in schools.
“The schools that were involved initiated their contingency plans for evacuations, as well as their regular protocols for these types of threats took appropriate actions and police became involved,” he said. “No threat was found in any of the schools and they were dismissed at their regular time, none were closed and there were no further issues at that time.”
The threat was received shortly before 9 a.m.
A suspicious package was called in from Ernest Manning High School, but it turned out to be a lunch box.
The CPS’ Cyber Crimes Unit has been called in to investigate, which includes tracking down the IP address of where the email came from so they can identify a suspect.
A letter was sent to parents informing them of the situation.
