Almost a week after the provincial election in which the PCs were decimated in the legislature and Jim Prentice resigned, the party has named its interim leader.
Veteran politician Ric McIver will take over for the party, which went from a majority to third-party status following last week’s historic election.
“I’m honoured my caucus colleagues would entrust me to lead the party during this very important time,” McIver said in a release. “We have a great caucus team, and everyone will be working to rebuild our party with the interests of Albertans at heart.”
McIver has held multiple cabinet positions in past PC governments and was a longtime Calgary alderman.
He lost in the latest PC leadership race to Prentice last fall.
McIver won his second term as the MLA of Calgary-Hays, one of just 10 PCs to win their ridings.
He will speaking to reporters Monday afternoon.
