A 19-year-old woman has died from her injuries after being pulled from Quarry Lake in Canmore on Sunday.
Local paramedics arrived on scene around noon, where they were met by a group of bystanders.
“[They said] that a member of their party had been missing for about 30 minutes,” Adam Loria, a spokesman for EMS said. “Local fire services, as well as a group of public safety specialists entered the lake via motorized water craft. Alpine helicopter also assisted. Eventually they recovered a female, believed to be in her 20’s.”
The young was among an informal church group of about twenty people from the Calgary area. The group was swimming in Quarry Lake, and at one point, they noted that young woman was no longer with her group at the lake. Initially, it was believed that she was missing from the site.
As RCMP were en route, the young woman was found underwater. CPR was performed locally and she was transported to the Calgary Foothills hospital while resuscitation efforts continued. At approximately 5:00 p.m., the young woman died from her injuries.
Injuries sustained were consistent with drowning and it’s believed the young woman was not an experienced swimmer and she was not wearing a life jacket.
The identity of the victim is not being released.
