Perhaps they took a page out of the “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” script, but four people have been arrested following a multi-month investigation into odometer rollbacks in Calgary.
In April, CPS started investigating reports that high mileage vehicles were being sold after having their odometers rolled back.
Police say 15 victims purchased cars needing major repairs believing they have 50-70 per cent fewer kilometers than the vehicles had actually travelled.
Officers raided a home in Rocky Ridge earlier this month and seized rollback devices, cash, license plates, driver’s licenses not belonging to the residents, along with bear spray and a baton.
Damian Funk, 25, his common-law wife, Stephanie Degner, 27, and Jonathan Yardley, 35, are all charged in the case. Funk, facing nine charges of fraud over $5,000, has also been charged for an identical offence in Edmonton. Ashley Yardley, brother of Jonathan, was arrested on six outstanding warrants stemming from similar allegations in Edmonton.
In total, Calgary Police have laid 10 charges so far, and expect more to come. Seven charges are related to crimes committed in Alberta’s capital city.
