A 62-year-old man serving a life sentence for the 1974 sexual assault and fatal stabbing of three-year-old Calgary girl Lorrisa Severight has died.
Edward Kuchciak was found in medical distress on September 14th in Dorchester Penitentiary and was rushed to Moncton Hospital.
He died early Wednesday morning. Now nine days later, the cause of death remains under investigation.
Kuchciak, originally from Hamilton, had been living in Calgary and was unemployed.
Daniel Melanson, search specialist, dog handler and designated Dorchester spokesperson told 660 NEWS the inmate would have been under some sort of regular observation.
“The matter is under investigation as all deaths are in Correctional Services,” he said. “I’m guessing the investigation will reveal what exactly happened.”
Melanson couldn’t comment as to how long he would have been in medical distress before he was found, but local media is describing it as an “incident.”
“In this case, I don’t believe the offender had next of kin,” he adds. “I’m not sure whether he had siblings or whether they didn’t want anything to do with him anymore.”
It is also unclear whether or not the victim’s family has been notified.
