Calgarians are in for a week of sharp temperature swings, shifting from rain to heavy snow before rebounding toward double‑digit warmth by the weekend and heading into next week.
Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a snowfall warning for parts of central and southern Alberta, including Calgary, calling for 10 to 25 centimetres of accumulation between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday night. Some areas could see 30 centimetres or more, with blowing snow reducing visibility at times.
“Snow will begin Wednesday afternoon over the foothills and spread eastward through Wednesday evening,” the agency said. “Precipitation could begin as rain for some regions before quickly changing to snow.”
In Calgary, rain is expected to begin on Wednesday afternoon. But by Wednesday night, temperatures are forecast to drop to –7 C, with that rain quickly turning to snow.
Snow is expected to continue through Thursday, when daytime highs will hover around –3 C.
After that, conditions begin to improve. Friday is forecast to reach 4 C with a mix of sun and cloud, followed by a high near 8 C on Saturday.
By Sunday, Calgarians could be hitting the patios as temperatures approach 20 C. Monday will cool slightly, but is still expected to reach around 15 C.
