Calgarian returns from working in Syrian refugee camp

A Calgary woman with the Canadian Red Cross is back from working in a Syrian refugee camp in Germany.
Valerie Heerema told 660 NEWS the short-stay facility in Erding operated like a well-oiled machine and she’s hoping to apply what she learned to help the refugees starting to arrive here in this city.
“I think what we would probably need more of is some of the resources and that’s where the Canadian public can contribute by donating to the Red Cross to help provide funding for the refugees when they do come here to go on further in their lives in Canada,” Heerema said.
She also mentioned how there were all types of people that needed help in Syria, including families, seniors and teenagers.
“We had people that were disabled, in wheelchairs, we had people from all walks of life and of cours part of our job in psycho-social was to ensure that their basic needs were met but also their emotional needs as well,” she said.
She added some of the people she met were nearing the end of a four-year journey to get their families out of the war zone to a safe place where they could restart their lives.
