Calgarians react to Cecil Hotel teardown

The week-long teardown of the old watering hole known as the Cecil Hotel has begun.

Demolition crews moved onto one of the city’s oldest pieces of property Tuesday morning after the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation decided it couldn’t be saved.

Bryan was walking past and took in some of the action.

“Well, I just thought it was a sad event for downtown Calgary and we’ll see what happens after this,” he said.

He added he hopes something beneficial goes in its place.

Daniel also chimed in and said it’s about time.

“Last year it was open, it had 1,700 police calls,” he said. “Is it a part of history? Yeah, but they could have done something like 15 years ago to save it.”

“It sat derelict since 2009, it hasn’t been touched since ’09, even back then, it was kind of like ‘do you even want to go there?'”

Work began on the building’s extensions Tuesday, then on Wednesday they’ll move onto the beer store and then Thursday they’ll begin tearing away at the hotel.
