Demerit points now included for distracted driving in Alberta

Starting on Jan. 1, 2016 distracted driving will cost you more than just $287.

After much debate and discussion, the transportation minister passed an order in council, increasing penalties to include three demerit points when you are nabbed for distracted driving.

The law covers a number of areas, including holding or viewing a cellphone or GPS, along with reading or doing personal grooming.

City police have long stated that more needed to be done to stop distracted driving.
