Moisturizer is the simplest solution for dry skin

One of the lousy things about winter is dry skin.

If you find yourself scratching, dermatologists say the first thing you want to do is moisturize.

“You have to make your skin think it’s in a hot, humid climate, continuously,” according to Calgary dermatologist, Dr. Kirk Barber.

“So, the real treatment begins not in February, it starts in August,” he said. “So you have to start preparing your skin for the coming winter, and that is avoiding the irritants and making sure that you’re keeping your skin in as good a shape in prep for the winter, as you can.”

Dr. Barber says consistent treatment with moisturizer is especially effective if you suffer from cracked finger tips.

He recommends treating cracked fingers with Vaseline or Polysporin. Crazy glue or a liquid bandaid on the cracks may also help.
