Construction going ahead downtown despite economic woes

Construction workers won’t be laying down the hammers and saws this year, even as the oil slump continues.
Michael Van Ham with the City of Calgary says there have been quite a few applications for 2016 combining hotel or condominium space, with retail on the first few floors.
“What we’re seeing is a lot of these are mixed use,” he said. “We did see quite a lot in the East Village area, as well as Eau Claire, and even something new in the West Village.”
He says there are also countless residential projects slated to begin across the core.
“We’ve seen a lot of towers come in over the 2015 year, which means projects will start in the 2016 year,” Van Ham said.
As Calgary deals with a lot of empty office space, a lot of developers are taking the safer bet by combining commercial with residential space.
