Calgary Police Service say their investigation into a fentanyl trafficking and stolen property ring may help solve a recent murder.
In August 2015, police received an anonymous tip that started a joint investigation between its Drug Unit and Auto Theft Team. On Tuesday Jan. 5, 2016, officers executed two search warrants in the 0-100 block of Sage Hill Gardens N.W.
They seized 14 fentanyl pills, 2.8 grams of methamphetamine, 179 grams of marijuana, an electronic scale, four stolen skid steers, a stolen travel trailer and a Honda Civic.
“Although only a small amount of drugs were located on the property at the time of the execution of the warrant, investigators believe the property was being used to store and distribute a substantial amount of drugs, including fentanyl,” says CPS in a news release. “It is alleged that stolen vehicles were being brought to the property as a form of currency and may have been destined for resale. The total value of the stolen property recovered is estimated to be $220,000.”
The Civic found on the property was linked to a vehicle the Homicide Unit investigators were looking for in connection to the murder of David Quach. He was gunned down in his family driveway in Monterey Park on Aug. 22, 2015. Homicide investigators charged Said Raed Abdulbaki, 20, of Calgary with second-degree murder in what was believed to be a targetted attack.
Police don’t know if anyone arrested in the drug bust is connected to the case.
Haitham Ramadan, 23, of Calgary, is charged with possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking and possession of property obtained by crime. He will next appear in court on January 15.
Kacy Cedric Savoie, 28, and Patrick Eric Boucher , 40, are both charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000 in relation to the stolen travel trailer. They will next appear in court on January 27.
Police say the investigation continues and more charges are likely.
