Drivers urged to stay alert at intersections

Are you making the right decisions behind the wheel?

January is Intersection Safety Month in the province and the government is issuing some gentle reminders.

In 2014, three of the five most frequent driver errors that led to a crash happened in these areas.

“Making a left turn across the path of an oncoming vehicle, committing a stop sign violation, so — rolling through a stop sign, and disobeying a traffic signal, like running a yellow light,” Allison Bignell with Alberta Transportation explained.

Bignell says whether you’re driving, cycling or walking, stay alert and be aware of your surroundings.

“Come to a complete stop, and make sure you look on your left and your right. Just be aware of what’s going on around you. Especially in winter, it’s slippery, so you’ve got to give people some more time to come to a complete stop,” she said.

Even if you don’t hurt yourself or someone else, failing to follow the rules could land you with a hefty fine or demerit points.
