Uber still seeing interest, despite current laws

It’s not on Calgary roads, but those looking to make some extra cash are still signing up to be drivers for ride-sharing app Uber.

Ramit Kar, general manager for Uber Alberta, says surprisingly, demand for the position continues to grow.

When Calgary City Council passed a bylaw in February to allow ride-sharing, Kar said the tight regulations would deter drivers from signing up, meaning there wouldn’t be enough people behind the wheel to keep up with demand.

Kar says, Uber is working with governments to get the ride-sharing service back on the streets as soon as possible.

“Both on the city as well as the provincial level, to make sure we can get ride-sharing back on the streets as soon as possible,” he said. “On the Calgary side, we’re continuing to hopefully have productive conversations here, so that we can get ride-sharing back in the city, but we’re hoping for flexibility on the bylaw.”

Alberta Transportation is hoping to have a new insurance product for the company by July.
