Province bans ATV riding during extreme wildfire risk

The Alberta government is banning the recreational use of all-terrain vehicles because of the extreme fire risk in the province.

Municipal Affairs Minister Danielle Larivee says the ban applies on all public land and in provincial parks.

It does not apply to ATVs used for farming and business or by aboriginals for traditional reasons.

The exhaust from ATVs has been known to start wildfires andconditions are prime because of a hot, dry spring.

The province instituted a fire ban in the province earlier this week.

A wildfire is raging in the Fort McMurray area and has already destroyed at least 1,600 homes.
