The City of Calgary reception centres holding Fort McMurray evacuees are nearing complete capacity.
There are four areas for those seeking refuge: Mount Royal University, SAIT, University of Calgary and Ambrose College.
Tom Sampson, head of the Calgary Emergency Management Agency, said at a news conference that there are lineups for those looking to get in.
“There’s only a limited amount of space left,” Sampson proclaimed. “I think if we’re lucky, we’ll put another 200 people into University of Calgary and into Mount Royal University.”
Sampson said if more people come looking for shelter, they may need to consider group lodging.
“What that means, it’ll be a large gymnasium type situation, where there’s possibly as many as 100 beds in one area. That’s not an ideal situation,” Sampson added.
He said that if you know someone from Fort McMurray, get in touch with them and offer housing.
