Psychiatrists to be called for defence in de Grood case

Three medical professionals will be called to the stand this week in order to speak to Matthew de Grood’s state of mind; two psychiatrists and a psychologist.

Crown attorney Neil Wiberg finished Day two Tuesday afternoon, giving the families an unprecedented chance to share with the court who their loves ones are.

It’s up to the defence and attorney Allan Fay now who is widely expected to present an “NCR” defence (Not Criminally Responsible).

Fay was visibly moved following the events of the afternoon.

“It’s a very unusual situation, it’s not a process that’s contemplated by the Criminal Code or by our traditions but this is a unique case and it was agreed between myself and the Crown and Justice Macklin that it was important that the families of the victims … had the opportunity to speak and I hope it gives them government,” he said.

“It’s incredibly hard,” he said, holding back the tears. “No one with a heart could hear that and be unmoved. Any of us who are parents, it just strikes right to the heart.”

Fay says the two psychiatrists that will be testifying Wednesday have dealt with his client.

When asked about the lack of emotion shown by de Grood, he’s hoping people will keep in mind that his client is being treated medically and what people are noticing are a result of medication and treatment.

“He’s very nervous, sad for the people who have lost, sad for his family,” said Fay.

The long-time defence attorney says it’s been difficult for the de Grood family whose heart goes out to the victims’ families.

After the defence is finished, final submissions will be held which could take place as soon as Tuesday.
