Shouldice Athletic Park holds grand re-opening

Shouldice Athletic Park is officially back up and running.

The third and final phase in the redevelopment project is complete and was unveiled Saturday May 28th.

The 2013 flood in Calgary destroyed all three artificial turf fields in the park, which have now been replaced.

Councillor Ward Sutherland said it’s been a long time coming and this is just the beginning.

“This is now going to be the premier park in all of northwestern Canada and over a million visitors are coming. We’re going to add a beautification program just to add to it because we’re going to have a lot of visitors so this is going to great revenue, great for sports, it’s a long long overdue and these guys have really pushed hard.” Sutherland said.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi said it’s important to have these kinds of spaces in Calgary.

“Number one is it encourages all Calgarians to live a more healthy lifestyle, number two is this particular place is just so beautiful right on the bank of the river and it just reminds us of the natural heritage of our city, but number three and the most important is that amateur sport builds community.” Nenshi said.

The renovated plaza includes more players change rooms, public washrooms and now has the ability to host large tournaments and events.
