What’s happening this weekend

It’s a great weekend for comedy and music lovers in Calgary.

There’s a ton of events helping people kick back and relax — or get excited, as summer festival season continues:

What: Summer Jazz Festival, presented by JAZZYYC
Where: Various venues
When: June 12 to 20

The Decidedly Jazz DanceWorks presents New Universe at 2 p.m. at the DJD Dance Centre. The Calgary Jazz Orchestra’s Birth of the Blues at 7 p.m. will also help kick things off at the River Park Church.

A showcase of 10 comics will put a bookend on the 16th annual Calgary Comedy Festival

When: Saturday, 8 p.m. & Sunday, 2:30 p.m., Tickets $30

This edgy musical is an adaptation of the 1989 cult classic film by the same name. The plot centres around teenage Veronica Sawyer, friends with three girls named Heather who rule the school. Things turn dark when she meets the mysterious and dangerous new kid, J.D.

What: $1 Back Warehouse Sale
Where: Recordland
When: Starts Saturday, will last all summer

If you prefer to chill out to some music, one of Calgary’s most popular vinyl sellers in Inglewood is opening up its back warehouse, filled with hundreds of thousands of records, for a massive sale. DJ Tom Mannix will be performing out front.

What: Sled Island Yoga
Where: Junction 9, Luke’s Drug Mart
When: Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. & Sunday, 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The organizers of Sled Island want to get people relaxed before they get swept up in some musical madness June 22-26. They’re hosting yoga classes Saturday morning at Junction 9, and Sunday morning at Luke’s Drug Mart, complete with playlists featuring Sled Island artists.

What: Adult Colouring Party
Where: Signal Hill Indigo
When: Saturday, 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.

The artists of Legendary Landscapes will share tips and tricks of adult colouring, and blank sheets will be provided for free for your artistic pleasure.

Movie Screenings, make-up demonstrations, and panels with actors from Friday the 13 & Canadian cult classic Ginger Snaps.

Where: Kananaskis Village.
When: Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

If you feel like escaping the city, you can take in multiple activities aimed at showcasing K-Country’s trails. Outdoor enthusiasts will be hiking, biking and eating some BBQ.

Where: Bella Concert Hall
When: Saturday, 2 p.m.

The charity event, put on by Musicians 4 Refugees YYC, includes a number of performers including the Calgary Girls’ Choir and the Calgary Boys Choir, Magician Richard Young, and Piano Prodigy Kevin Chen. THE fundraiser is presented by the Calgary North Hill Lions Club and hosted by MRU.
