Those hopping on a bus in the northwest, may want to double check their route to work or school.
Changes from the city’s 2016 Transit Service Review kicked in Monday, impacting some 10,000 commuters on a typical weekday.
Calgary Transit says buses in the northwest will come to stops more frequently, run later into the evening and longer on weekends. Spokesperson Jennie Palmer says the city is saving money by cutting service through downtown on routes 9 and 10, which have the highest ridership, but riders already have the option of taking the CTrain to the core.
“The routes were indirect, long and winding and there was duplicate service, meaning a lot of the buses travelled down the same roads,” says Palmer.
There’s no added cost to the City of Calgary, just a reallocation of cash from the savings.
The adjustments come after consultations with residents, seniors groups and others. Palmer says this much change is not typical.
“The only time we’ve done changes this big is when a CTrain line has been expanded. So like when we expanded to Crowfoot or Tuscany or when we built the West LRT Line, then all the bus routes in that area changed,” she says.
