Marathon piano performance kicks off festival

The Calgary Honens Festival has begun with an 18 hour performance!

40 pianists are playing the longest piano piece ever written to celebrate French composer Erik Satie’s 150th birthday.

Stephen McHolm, artistic director, says they wanted to go big this year.

“This is Calgary’s year of music, and we’re looking always for ways to engage the public in new ways and to bring people in for free events and to be part of the fun of piano music. Piano music doesn’t have to be stuffy, and in the concert hall either, it can be out on the street.”

McHolm adds even though the melody is a bit repetitive a lot of people say it puts you into a Zen-like trance.

The performers have been out since 4:30 a.m. Thursday and will go until midnight in front of Contemporary Calgary on Stephen Avenue.

The festival runs until Sunday.
