YMCA gives Grade Six students free memberships

Grade six students in the city can join the YMCA for free, as part of a program sponsored by the Calgary Flames Foundation.
VP of Marketing and Communications for the YMCA, Ken Lima-Coelho, says there are a lot of activities available to take part in.
“There’s even arts classes and that kind of thing, because we know not every kid is 100 per cent headed to the sports field. However, if they want to learn a little bit more about weightlifting and these kind of things, when they hit the age of 12, which is usually in their Grade Six year, we’ll also give them training,” he said.
In the last two years, 5,500 kids have participated.
“And just based on stats in the city, there’s about 15,000 Grade Six-ers,” Candice Goudie, Executive Director of the Calgary Flames Foundation, explained.
Lima-Coelho says they have capacity for every kid who has interest.
“The membership is all the way until August 31, (2017),” Goudie said, “You can just head into any location and just walk in, and you’ll get your membership card.”
