As the sandstone face of old City Hall gets restored, one council member is calling for sandstone quarries to be revived here in Calgary.
Calgary used be known as ‘the Sandstone City’, after a by-law back in 1886 called for buildings to be made out of non-flammable materials.
Now, the city is buying sandstone from overseas much to the chagrin of Councillor Gian-Carlo Carra.
He’s filed a motion for the city to look at reopening quarries at Edworthy Park and in Nose Hill.
The motion goes before council Monday.
