Calgary crate creepers flock to music collector’s show

It was paradise by the dashboard light for music lovers – rows and rows of records and other collectibles up for sale Sunday afternoon.

CDs, posters, t-shirts, and lots of vinyl were up for grabs at the Acadia Recreation Complex in southeast Calgary for the second Music Collector’s Show of the year.

Everything from new albums to classic blues and rock, and even albums printed in Japan were available, with most being very affordable and in very good condition.

Music aficionado Darren Shaben, visiting from B.C., spotted some pricey items.

“You know you’ve got an original Elvis Presley, the very first album, going for $100 to $200, but at the same time it’s weathered the years from 1956-57.”

Some of the other rare – and very expensive – items included a signed Bob Dylan record and a Tragically Hip album going for $650.

Shaben adds, it appears CDs are being phased out with this current rise in vinyl.

“I guess they’re going the way of the dodo bird. So plenty of vinyl, few rock and roll collectibles but a busy, busy building.”

There were hundreds of people looking to update their collections.

Doogie was one of the vendors selling his wares, including some rare and unique items, and he says he loves to see the different types of people that come through.

“In the morning, you get the hard-core collectors, and then shortly after that you get the moms and dads with the kids. After that, you get the early 20s kids that are finally getting out of bed.”

Nick Young was promoting his new record subscription service, Lockbox Record Club, and is ecstatic to see collections like this.

“Personally, I’ve always been a vinyl collector. I’ve always had a turntable. You know, sometimes that was my father’s turntable, but I used it more than he did.”

This is a sentiment echoed by Rich Liukko, who was down from Edmonton with Freecloud records.

“Now, there’s so much stuff available. So it’s really cool, especially earlier on, there’s a kid in his early teens coming in and buying classic 70’s hard rock and I’m like ‘Yes!'”

The show should be back again in the spring.
